The Parks & Wildlife Service (PWS) is inadequately funded to manage some 40% of Tasmania. It requires an adequate recurrent budget that is guaranteed in the medium-to-long term. A review to identify the levels of funding and staffing, together with the most appropriate management and operational structures, which would allow the agency to achieve its legislated management objectives in the most cost effective and economically efficient manner is also required. In recent years it is arguable whether the PWS has demonstrated the capacity or willingness to effectively and appropriately prioritise what gets done.
