Position Statement

Tasmania’s walking track network exceeds 2,000 kilometres and encompasses a wide variety of environments and recreational opportunities. Many environmental and social issues associated with track use are long-standing and/or have been long-foreseen. Many of these issues are symptoms of poor management and planning, exacerbated by the increasing demand for outdoor recreation opportunities.

There is a considerable body of research and history of stakeholder consultation regarding various management approaches dating back some thirty years but none have been fully implemented or effective. The TNPA has developed a position statement outlining a framework for the sustainable management of walking tracks and associated experiences in Tasmania. A multi-faceted and strategic approach is necessary.

The Tasmanian National Parks Association offers an independent voice for Tasmania’s national parks and reserves, to ensure they are managed for the conservation of the values for which they were proclaimed.
